This post mostly exists for this link to Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion's Indiegogo campaign to make a show called "Con Man."

(Yes, I threw money at it. No, I really shouldn't have considering my deepening depression over not being able to afford a house and perhaps not being able to afford rent soon. Whatever.)

Also of interest: There really IS a difference between Samoas and Caramel DeLites. They're baked by two different bakeries. My coworker gave me two boxes of Thin Mints sold to him by his East Coaster niece (who came for a visit and I guess brought a suitcase of cookies to sell), and in spite of her mint aversion, Kerry bought some Thin Mints from her Girl Scout Cookie supplier of choice (a coworker's kid) because Mike likes them, so we need to conduct a taste test. For SCIENCE! (Which, as much as they are called "Thin" Mints, I surmise they will make me anything but...)

Interesting video on How memes and other things are brain germs. I actually rather like the analogy.

And I guess that's it for now. I'm alive. Yup :/

Survived Flight & Friend's Wedding
Hammer Time

In short, things were incredibly stressful right up until my flight, but I did get most of the things done (but not all). And then proceeded to forget important items at home that were meant to be Christmas presents. And I will save the teapot saga for sometime when I have a LOT of time to type a LOT of text. It is full of tears and agony.

Also managed to do the character creation party(?)/get-together thing for the 5th Edition D&D Game I'm attempting to put together. Members of my previous game will be pleased to know that this game will be taking place in the same world, because my players are okay with this. (Max has soothed the pain of knowing I now need to buy new books for this game by getting me the 5th Ed. Dungeon Master's Guide, LOL. But man, the new books not be cheap D: Yikes.) This is going to be the most anti-social conglomeration of loners and weirdos ever, and by that I mean their characters, not the players themselves (because they're actually quite sociable). Max, for example, is a psionic ant colony. Mike and Kerry are (respectively) a dwarf and a half-elf stuck in a third person's body (whom I will be rolling up sometime before the first game), where control of said body is determined "randomly" by their son, who will almost certainly be calling for one of them at all times. (Almost always will be calling for Kerry, actually. It's not the most fair of randoms.) And then we have a traumatized gnomish loner, a hermit monk wood elf who doesn't like other people, and a lone wolf druidic tiefling. And I am working on coming up with a believable premise for bringing the whole lot of them together in the D&D equivalent of Las Vegas for hijinks and adventure. Yeah.

So far after arriving here, I've managed to attend edgecase's wedding (it was on the beach, and the weather was great, and the people were really lovely) and I've managed to actually sleep (HUGE POSITIVE). Turns out my internal clock is much more attuned to Hawaii time. (Not the biggest surprise.) Also, I bought a new watch to replace my old one which was being held together (literally) by a scrap of yarn from the mini stockings I was knitting, and then forgot to distribute -_- I'm being eaten alive by mosquitoes here, I should add.

And I finally made a decision on a new phone (the Nexus 5, which isn't so "new" per se, but would be new to me and seems like a good fit for me) only to discover that a couple of weeks ago, it was discontinued. Back to limbo and wondering if I should settle for the Samsung 5S. (First world problems, and yes, it really bugs me. I also didn't realize another item I've wanted for a while was being discontinued and missed my opportunity to get that, so the sting is worse. Needless to say, I'm watching the Play store like a hawk for any sign of re-stock.)

Finally, I am apparently the last person in the world to get a DropBox account. If, by some miracle, you haven't yet created an account and want one, please use my referral link so I can get the free increases in space... (Yes, I sink that low, but I may wish to use DropBox to distribute some of my D&D world info at some point in the future.)

I'm still alive, and I would like to request address updates from folks if you're willing :) You know, for holiday cards full of well-wishes & etc. Because I kind of have to get those done very soon and I realized to my great horror that I had not yet requested the address update... Sorry, guys, I'm dropping the ball on pretty much everything this year D:

But I been busy.Collapse )

Yup, another round. Because I can't stay off of Kickstarter:
  • It's Mighty No. 9 again, now trying to fund even more fun things (and actually voice acting in both English and Japanese, because right now, we have to vote, and that seems sad to me). I almost voted for Japanese just because their voice actors always seem so awesome, but I think it would be awesome if we got both. So now I'm trying to entice you guys into it :P
  • The Upcart just seems like a really smart design, and as someone who hopes to move somewhere better in the next year or two, I think this would be a real help. (And would prevent me from taking half an hour walking another Ikea shelf on my toes from the car to my apartment, because I couldn't drag it without damaging the shelf and it was too heavy for me to lift.) Needless to say, I bought one, but without the "custom fit" bag, because they aren't really telling me much about it other than that it's a bag with their logo on it.
  • LeggyHorse Picture Frame, which seems cool, but they're keeping pretty damn mum on how the thing works, which makes me inherently less trustful of their claims that it'll stick to anything. Also, the guy's shirt says "believe in only meat," which amuses me even if it is probably a dig at my kind :P Alas, the frame is backed with leather for some ridiculous reason, so it is not for me. Alert me when the cheap vinyl knockoffs start appearing, though.
  • PowerPot's Pronto fast-charging battery looks cool, but their products are always way more than I can justify paying for them. Even at the super earlybird levels :( I'll just, you know, go assemble that MintyBoost kit I bought an age ago and hope that it works with whatever phone I replace my current one with... when that happens...

It's after midnight and Xia can't sleep. Time for a Kickstarter Linkdump!

  • The Affair's UNPOCKET kind of caught my attention because it looks like something that would be good for travel, like an RFID-proof passport holder. I'm not as worried about disappearing from a grid, and the clothing is pricier than I can realistically afford, but the pocket itself would be good for that sort of thing. (It's better than tinfoil, but it won't make a hat.)
  • Resolute Bay commuter denim is pretty awesome, but also kind of too expensive (plus £20 for shipping to the US? Yikes...). But I do really like the idea of the zippered reflective panel because it kills two birds with one stone--makes the jeans longer in the back so when you're cycling your backside is covered, plus adds a big slash of reflective surface to the back of you. Reflective stuff on the inside cuffs is pretty standard for any kind of pants marketed towards commuters/cyclists, but that's the first time I've seen the zippered panel! Very innovative :D
  • The Everpurse is a good idea in terms of the wireless charging mat, for sure. I always stick my purse in the same place when I get home, so having a charging mat put there would be very little trouble. Having a dock in a pocket of your purse, however, I could see not being the greatest (seems like it would be hard to snap it in if you've got a lot of stuff in your bag, which I always do), but I suppose that's better than having wires? I think I'd put a grommet with a short wire coming through, because a dock in the bottom of the pocket is going to get so much lint all over it... Also, they make a lot of noise about how "cute" the bag is, but... it's just really simple. Which is good in many ways, but I require ALL THE POCKETS. On the outside, too. And probably a little more width. (I wonder if I could modify the vegan leather one to fit my personal tastes...)
  • I post the DokiWear CG Art Glove more as a curiosity than much else. I don't own a Cintiq or tablet, I've got a Bamboo and I can barely draw with it (because I don't practice and I can't get over drawing on one surface but only being able to see on another surface), but given my disgusting sweaty hands, I can see why someone might want this. Why a regular knitted glove with some fingers cut off doesn't suffice, I can't say, but I guess if you're making a specific glove for this kind of thing, you might as well make a chunk of it microfiber cleaning cloth. Even at the (still available) $15 Early Bird level, this seems a little overpriced to me...
And that's all the entertainment for now, folks.

[EDIT 10/2/2014: Oh. Damn. I also really want to buy a Tesla brick for the Wardenclyffe Museum, but it's kind of expensive and I really have no idea what to put on the brick, heh. Still...]
